** 01. Letter from the Publisher

As expected we received a number of horror stories from TNPCers
about their experiences with online trading in response to Jim's
article last issue. Jim agrees with TNPCer Glen C. that online
trading has just slapped a flaky Web interface front end on a
back end process that is still of the decidedly old-economy,
business-as-usual stock brokerage variety. Add E*Trade's rapid
growth and the problems with hiring and training staff and you
have plenty of potential problems. The good news is that many of
you have good things to say about online trading. Hopefully
someone will figure out how to bring the Web and trading
activities into a harmonious balance. Meantime we'll just have to
hope that online activities get better as we go along.

We've received lots of mail about Dan, Lee, and Jim's book
"The Unofficial Guide to PCs" (TUGPCs). Seems it is getting
harder and harder to find copies in local bookstores. The fact of
the matter is that the publisher, QUE, has sold the actual title
of the series, "The Unofficial Guide," to another publisher.
TUGPCs is a single book under that general series title. As such,
while TUGPCs remains a QUE title, there's very little incentive
for QUE to push the books in that series now that another
publisher will be using the title in the future. Once a publisher
stops pushing a title it stops showing up in bookstores. As you
can imagine we're not very happy about this turn of events but
there's nothing we can do about it.

QUE assures us that TUGPCs will continue to be available and that
it will be updated someday but you just never know. The good news
here is that for the time being you can get all the copies you
want through Amazon.

In this issue Al continues his coverage on programs and utilities
available for Windows 2000, Lee covers the remaining steps in
picking out the perfect cell phone plan, and Dan has a follow up
to his Mind Map article. Meanwhile Jim shares the solution to a
system wart that recently pounced on his unsuspecting system.

If you listen to AM radio in the Portland, Oregon area you just
might have heard us chatting away. Jim and Lee have been frequent
guests on the "On Your Side" show hosted by the amiable and
informative Ed Teachout (Talk 620 Radio). Seems Ed has a penchant
for our eBay Magazine articles. Stay tuned!

As always, reader support is what keeps TNPC free, so PLEASE help
us with our subscription drive and pass a copy of TNPC on to co-
workers and friends (no spam please!) and remember to always say
"I saw it in TNPC!"

So now you know.

** 02. Windows 2000 3rd Party Utilities (OCR): Part 2
       (by Al Gordon)

I recently have been testing the definitive OCR and scanning
suite: Pagis Pro Millennium Scanning Suite from ScanSoft.

What, I hear you say, has TNPC suddenly joined the ranks of
computer publications that focus on keeping manufacturers and
their PR departments happy? Well, although we may or may not be
as willing to be seduced as the next guy, in this case there is
no real issue. ScanSoft, the Peabody MA-based Xerox spin-off,
pretty much IS the OCR/scanning software leader.

Having previously acquired the PaperPort software from Visioneer
(which made the primary rival for Pagis in document management),
ScanSoft now has bought out Caere, makers of OmniPage, which
battled ScanSoft's TextBridge in the OCR realm. If you need
products in this category, they most likely will come from
ScanSoft.

For now, the company says it intends to maintain all three
product lines. A new version of PaperPort has just been released,
and previously announced new editions of OmniPage still are on
the market as is PageKeeper, Caere's document manager. Company
officials would not be pinned down on their exact intentions, but
it looks as if Pagis will be positioned as the mainstream product
for end-user and small office business use, while PaperPort will
be focused on home use and the Caere line will be aimed at larger
corporate users.

Happily, the consolidation looks promising. Typically, the
software that is bundled with their scanner dictates what users
employ for these purposes. Hence, Visioneer customers got
PaperPort, HP customers got software from whatever company had
most recently cut a deal with HP, and so on. My last HP scanner
came bundled with de-contented Caere software, plus an upgrade
offer for the "pro" versions, and so I became a Caere user.
Frankly, I was never much enchanted by those products, finding
them buggy and clunky. In the end, I yearned for the elegant
simplicity of the PaperPort software I used in the past.

The Pagis Pro Suite in my testing looks to have a nice blend
between simplicity and capability. It installs as a sub-folder of
your Windows "My Documents" folder, and nicely integrates with
Windows Explorer. It has the usual capabilities you want in a
document management program such as the capability to move
content to other applications, preview document contents, and do
extensive searching. The suite also includes a very good Forms
Fill-In software, which solves the age-old problem: how do you
"type" in information on a paper form when there is no typewriter
in the house? In the examples I tried, it correctly identified
where it should place its fields that allow the user to "type" in
data.

Less critical is a Copier utility, which did an OK job of making
direct scanner-to-printer copies, but didn't match the quality of
HP's own utility. Kai's PhotoSoap 2, a basic graphics editing
program, also is in the package, and ScanSoft earned points with
me by arranging the setup routine so that you can easily skip
that installation--much appreciated for users who already have
preferred graphics software in place.

And--the centerpiece of the bundle--there is the latest version
of TextBridge. I was very impressed with it. Accuracy was
noticeably better than I had seen with OmniPage. Remember, of
course, that "accuracy" for OCR is always a relative term: even
very good software will make errors. But TextBridge made
relatively few. It also did a good job of passing documents along
to Word 2000 and other applications for editing. I particularly
liked TextBridge's ability to convert magazine and other
publication pages into Word documents or HTML while preserving
much of the original layout and graphics. The biggest obstacle
here turned out not to be the software, but the current fashions
in layout design, which seem to demand ridiculously busy
graphics.

The software is not without flaws, especially in the realm of
interfaces. For example, since Pagis uses a proprietary file
format, it must translate its items into standard formats before
it can pass a document along to other software, and you have to
struggle to set that intermediary format. Similarly, TextBridge
would make me a lot happier if it didn't open up another instance
of Word every time it sent a document to it, and had a simple
setting for putting all scanned information into a single font
size and style (for when you want pure, raw text entry, free of
formatting).

But all in all, this is a very nice package, and one that I use
regularly.

** 03. System Warts - Shutdown Nightmares (by T.J. Lee)

A system wart hasn't plagued me in a long time so I guess I was
due. There I was, the end of a long day and all I wanted to do
was shut down my PC so I could get the heck out of Dodge. Click
Start, Shut Down, select the Shut Down option button, click OK
and I'm out of here, right? Wrong. I wait for the system's power
management support to work with Windows 98 and switch off the
power. But the system doesn't shut down. It restarts.

Hmmm, maybe I checked the wrong option button in the Shut Down
Windows dialog. That dialog remembers the last option button you
checked and it's likely that I restarted the system at least
once, it is after all Windows. So I very carefully repeat the
shutdown process and make sure I check the Shut Down option
button and not the Restart button. Once again the system fails to
shut down; it restarts.

Don't you just hate it when your computer begins exhibiting
bizarre behavior when it had been working fine? I hadn't
installed any new hardware or software either for that matter.
Why is it that Windows never suddenly starts working *better* all
by itself? Or why all of a sudden can't something that was not
working at all start working? I guess it's just the law of
Windows, er, I mean entropy that everything moves towards an
unordered state.

Now I'm stuck. I could hit the manual switch on the back of the
power supply to force a shut down but that means I have to endure
the chiding of the system that Windows did not normally shut down
and then it'll run it's Scandisk process and generally be
annoying when I fire the computer up in the morning.

A quick look at my TechNet disk brought the usual solutions, like
"Disable fast shutdown" in Windows advanced configurations
settings. There are 26 Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that
recommend you disable this option to fix problems ranging from
the system hanging when shutting down to the restart problem I
was having. If you're having system shutdown problems you should
seriously consider disabling this option. (Start, Run, msconfig,
OK, General, Advanced, and check the "Disable fast shutdown"
check box.)

Note that once you install the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown
Supplement described below, the "Disable fast shutdown" check box
is no longer listed on Msconfig's Advanced tab (the dialog is
entitled "Advanced Troubleshooting Settings").

I pulled the plug on fast shutdown but that did nothing to fix my
problem and every time I tried to shut down the computer it
restarted. Never give up, never surrender, so I kept sifting the
Knowledge Base until I came across this little gem, "Windows 98
Second Edition Shutdown Supplement" PSS ID Number: Q239887. This
led me to a utility I'd never heard of before called 4756US8.EXE.
This patch is available on the MS Web site:
http://www.TheNakedPC.com/t/311/tr.cgi?warts1

Reading the documentation provided by Microsoft gave me nary a
clue as to what the problem that suddenly reared its ugly head on
system was, or what caused it. They toss phrases like, "shutdown
failures on some Windows installations" or "shutdown issues on
computers with specific hardware and software configurations
running Windows 98 Second Edition." The ominous part was that the
article hinted that this was a solution of last resort and that
you should try all the other recommended solutions before going
with this one.

I installed the patch and now my system once again happily turns
itself off when I shut down Windows. I really hate system warts.
As a footnote to this issue, I noticed just after I solved my
dilemma that a thread on this very problem was raging on our
Annoyance Board. I could have saved myself some time if I had
checked there first. If you haven't visited the Annoyance Board
please do stop by:

** 04. Mind Maps - What Makes Them Tick - by Dan Butler

Last issue's article on Mind Maps was a resounding success. Many
of you wrote about how you use Mind Maps in your life. Several
TNPCers even shared with me existing Mind Maps that they had
created. It was exciting to see how many people find them useful,
and even more exciting to hear from those just discovering how
useful this method of note taking can be. In this article I'll
share some of my thoughts on Mind Maps in particular and
creativity in general. If you aren't familiar with Mind Maps
check the sample map I created with MindManager and converted to
HTML from last issue:
http://www.TheNakedPC.com/t/311/tr.cgi?maps1

What Mind Maps give you is a visual representation of how you are
storing information on any given topic. Most of us are used to
taking notes of things in a way that represents the structure of
the original material. The traditional notes and outlines we are
all familiar with fall in this category. These notes are still
useful. A combination of both note types usually works best for
me. The real strength of the Mind Map approach comes when you
combine your notes from various sources into one map giving you
an overview of your accumulated knowledge in any topic.

Why did the MindManager software get me so excited? Because the
maps work the same either at the computer or on paper. The
computer-based Mind Map gives you more features and the ability
to dynamically alter the map, but the basic functionality remains
the same. Many of the benefits gained by PIMs (Personal
Information Managers) and the like are lost when you aren't at
your computer, forcing you to access your information in
different ways. This is very frustrating to me. The Mind Map
transcends this limitation and lets you focus on your data rather
than the technique. Each time you look something up on your Mind
Map all of the data is reinforced, increasing your retention.

Electronic organizers carry the promise of making our data
portable. Our esteemed colleague Al Gordon uses a Palm Pilot but
I just can't bring myself to haul around an electronic device
(the only exception being my Minidisk recorder). Besides there is
just something about seeing things in my own handwriting that
makes it personal. So I use handwritten Mind Maps for the most
part and use the MindManager software when I need to share things
with others or quickly convert my map to a Web page or outline
for further development.

Creating maps between different disciplines and exploring the
relationships I find has been very useful to me. For instance I
have many years experience in sleight-of-hand and by profession I
am a Webmaster. Combining thoughts between the two yielded many
parallels that weren't apparent before the exercise. Adding other
interests of mine to the mix has produced a unique body of
knowledge for me to draw upon in my day to day work.

** 05. Cell Phones, Getting the Right One: Part 2 (by Lee
       Hudspeth)

In the last issue (TNPC #3.10) I answered the top three questions
about how to get the right cell phone.
http://www.TheNakedPC.com/articles/v03/10/0310-03.html

Now I'll answer the remaining five key questions I frequently
encounter from clients, family, and friends.

4. How do I compare costs between plans?

A quick way to compare apples to apples is to normalize all of a
plan's costs to the total cost per minute for a one-year period.

   a. Calculate the total cost of the phone (use your original
phone's sunk cost if you're keeping an existing phone).

   b. Add any activation fee.

   c. Add all monthly fees up for twelve months and assume you
      don't go over plan.

   d. Total items (a), (b), and (c) and call this "Gross Annual
      Fees."

   e. Multiply your plan's monthly minute ceiling by 12. Call
      this "Total Annual Plan Minutes."

   f. Divide Gross Annual Fees by Total Annual Plan Minutes. Call
this "Total Annualized Cost per Minute."

   g. Calculate Total Annualized Cost per Minute for your current
provider and at least two other providers.

The winning plan will quickly stand out.

5. How do I decide if it's time to change to another provider?

Even if you're blissfully happy with your current plan, or even
if you just signed up to a new plan three months ago, the
competition is fierce in this burgeoning business. Prices for
service and phones are constantly dropping, new features are
being implemented while we sleep, and all-digital coverage areas
are growing like wildfire. For example, the Nokia 6160 phone,
when purchased with the AT&T Digital One Rate plan, was priced at
$215.42 in December 1999 and at $179.99 just two weeks ago.
That's a 16% drop in four months!

Dig out your current Cellular Service Agreement and read it
carefully. Therein lies either the secret escape hatch or the sad
news that unless you want to pay a hefty termination fee you'll
have to wait a stretch before getting out. We suggest you review
your plan's terms quarterly.

6. What accessories should I buy?

A cigarette lighter charger for your car (convenient, no, make
that mandatory).

A hands-free car kit for safety.

A PC connectivity kit (see #1 above). Some folks like ultra-
extended batteries, too.

7. What are some good Web resources covering cell phones and
stuff?

* Point.com is a good place to shop for a wireless phone, service
plan, and accessories. You can do side-by-side comparisons of
more than 4,000 service plans and hundreds of phones and
accessories. And of course you can buy everything conveniently
online.
http://www.point.com

* PC Computing magazine's "Top Digital Phones" (note: this
article, although excellent, is over one year old).
http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,388230,00.html

* Various public newsgroups ranging from the general
(alt.cellular) to the specific (alt.cellular.nokia or
alt.cellular.sprintpcs).

8. What's the best way to get someone who's talking obnoxiously
on a cell phone in a public place to stop?

A tip of the TNPC hat to my wife Liz for this suggestion. Lean
over and earnestly start giving the caller advice on what they
should do about whatever it is they're talking about. The key
here is to be totally sincere. Now, since this solution might in
some circumstances evolve into a brawl, always judge your chatty
neighbor accordingly.

** 07. Featured Product - WebStripper

No it's not what you think! This is a handy as a pocket on a
shirt utility that lets you pull down a Web page, along with all
the graphics, and drop that page on your local hard disk. What's
more you can grab a given level of the site or the entire site
including all pages, even the pages linked from the pages you
grab no matter if they're on another site altogether. This is a
great tool for Webmasters or Web surfers. Download an entire site
while you work on something else then browse it locally at
considerably faster speeds than those possible over the Internet.
Of course the best part of this utility is that it's free.

** 08. Featured Entertainment - Computer Games

Since this is the start of the summer season we thought that all
computer work and no play makes for dull reading. But rather than
try to play and review the latest games around we turned to one
of our occasional sponsors, Intelligamer.com. The folks at
Intelligamer.com play and review the hottest games available. So
for the computer gamers among the TNPC readership we want to
direct your attention to three games that recently won 4 stars or
better. "Tachyon: The Fringe" and "StarLancer" are two space
combat games that offer some real surprises and outstanding
graphics. For real time action check out "Everquest: Ruins of

** 09. Featured Book - "The Mind Map Book" (by Tony Buzan)

What an inspiring book I found this to be. Originally published
in 1993 I finally picked up a copy last week and found it
fascinating, just over 300 pages in length with lots of full
color illustrations. You'll also find pages out of many great
thinkers' notebooks. People like Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton,
Thomas Edison, etc. While they didn't use Mind Maps explicitly
the notes were interesting. I found it inspiring seeing these
notes gathered together all in one place.

You might view this book as Applied Mind Mapping. There is
instruction on Mind Mapping but the majority of the book is spent
on practical application. How to apply Mind Maps to business
meetings, presentations, family meetings, daily organizers, etc.
Twelve specific areas are discussed and illustrated with colorful
Mind Maps.

If you are looking for an introductory book you might be
disappointed. On the other hand the best way to get started is to
jump in and start making maps and this book gives you plenty of
great start off points. Don't wait for the dogmatic step-by-step
end all method of doing Mind Maps. Part of their appeal is how
unique they are to *you*. Veteran Mind Mappers will pick this
book up and find it comes complete with plenty of good Mind
Mapping ideas.
