An alert reader, Mark Levinson, admonished me that my review of Funduc Software's Search and Replace utility failed to warn that S&R is designed for ASCII formatted files and should NOT be used with Word, other Office, or any other files with proprietary binary formatting, lest file corruption occur. (It will, however, work with RTF.)
Fonduc offers a freeware macro, Word Search and Replace for
dealing with Microsoft Word's binary files.

I managed to get away with using S&R in my testing with Word documents, a phenomenon that Fonduc attributed to sheer dumb luck. Don't do it again, was is the advice from tech support.
